EoE Signs and Symptoms
Eosinophilic esophagitis occurs when a type of white blood cell, called eosinophils, builds up in the esophagus. This can cause inflammation and make it hard to eat or swallow.
Trouble Swallowing
One of the most common symptoms of EoE is difficulty swallowing, also called dysphagia. People with EoE may feel like food is getting stuck in their throat or chest. This is because the esophagus becomes inflamed and narrowed, making it harder for food to pass through.
Food Getting Stuck
In severe cases, food can become stuck in the esophagus. This is called a food impaction, and it can be very uncomfortable and even dangerous. If this happens, you might need medical help to remove the food.
Chest Pain
Some people with EoE experience chest pain that feels similar to heartburn. This pain is caused by inflammation in the esophagus and can occur even when you’re not eating.
Acid Reflux Symptoms
EoE can sometimes feel like acid reflux. You may have a burning sensation in your chest or throat, or you might experience regurgitation, where stomach contents come back up into the esophagus.
Stomach Pain
Abdominal pain is another possible symptom of EoE. This pain can range from mild discomfort to severe cramping, and it often happens after eating.
Difficulty Eating Certain Foods
People with EoE might find it harder to eat certain foods, especially those that are dry or hard to chew, like bread or meat. These foods are more likely to get stuck in the esophagus.
Vomiting
Vomiting or feeling nauseous after eating can also be a sign of EoE. This is more common in children but can happen to adults as well.
Poor Growth in Children
For children, EoE can lead to poor growth and weight gain. This happens because eating can be so difficult and uncomfortable that they may avoid food, leading to poor nutrition.
Chronic Cough
A persistent cough that doesn’t go away may be a sign of EoE. This can happen when the inflammation in the esophagus irritates the throat.
Symptoms Can Vary
It’s important to know that symptoms of EoE can vary from person to person. Some people may have mild symptoms, while others may have more severe problems that affect their daily life.
When to See a Doctor
If you or your child has any of these symptoms, it’s a good idea to see a doctor. EoE is often diagnosed through a procedure called an endoscopy, where a small camera is used to look inside the esophagus. A biopsy may also be taken to check for eosinophils.
Managing EoE
Treatment for EoE usually involves changes to your diet, medications to reduce inflammation, and sometimes procedures to stretch the esophagus. A doctor can help create a plan that works best for you.
Understanding the signs and symptoms of EoE is the first step to getting help. If you think you may have EoE, talk to your doctor for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.
